It may have been wet, but Wollongong still shone – the Australian Standard Championships at the Peoplecare Wollongong Triathlon provided a perfect preview of the 2025 World Triathlon Age Group Championships.
With just under six months until Wollongong welcomes the world, the event crowned 26 Australian champions, while many others earned the opportunity to represent Australian through automatic qualification.
Athletes who finish in the top five of their age group categories and meet the eligibility criteria outlined in the selection policy earned their spot for October’s World Triathlon Age Group Championships.
Lord Mayor of the City of Wollongong, Councillor Tania Brown, and Member for Wollongong, The Hon. Paul Scully, officially got racing underway, sounding the starter’s horn.
As the countdown the Wollongong Worlds continues, Brown spoke about the city’s passion for triathlon and excitement for the event.
“Wollongong loves triathlon,” Brown said.
“Our community loves getting out around the harbour, getting it the water and cycling around. They’re used to it, they enjoy it, they love coming out to watch it.
“I know they’re going to be excited 200 days from now to see the world’s best coming here and Wollongong being on the global stage.
“It’s incredible to hear there’s been such as strong response. I encourage everyone to get their applications in because you do not want to miss out on being here – this will be one of the premier events for World Triathlon and we know Wollongong is going to turn it on for everyone – so get amongst it!”
The Hon. Paul Scully MP echoed Brown’s sentiments, emphasising the excitement within the community and Wollongong’s proven ability to deliver world-class events.
“It’s going to be a great event not just for the city, but for thousands that are registered to be part of the event to come to Wollongong,” Scully said.
“Not only will they get to see a different part of the world – we’re a city who are willing to go the extra mile to put on a great event. We’ve seen it before with multiple events here and we’re looking forward to thousands of people descending on Wollongong for the World Championships in October.
“I can guarantee you’re going to have a good time when you come to Wollongong. We have great racing, a great course, but also a fun city to be a part of – it’s the whole package. If you haven’t registered, get that registration in, get that expression of interest in and even if you’re not a participant come along and enjoy the vibe of our city.”
