As the brother of Paris 2024 Paralympian Grace, Jude Brimelow is fuelled by a drive to represent Australian in the green and gold, just like his sister.
This Sunday at the Australian Sprint Championship, he’ll have the chance to earn that honour – with more than just national titles on the line at the Gold Coast Triathlon.
The event is one of two key qualification races for the World Triathlon Age Group Championships in Wollongong, with the Australian Standard Championships still to come.
Those who place in the top five of their respective age group categories at the events, and meet the eligibility criteria outlined in the selection policy will be given automatic qualification.
For 15-year-old Brimelow, earning a spot on the Australian Age Group Team would represent the first major milestone on his journey.
“It’s pretty exciting. I’d love a chance to compete at Wollongong,” Brimelow said.
“One of my goals is to represent Australia. I am young and just starting in a triathlon career. To be able to reflect that my first World Championship was in Australia, where I know friends and family will be there, is an opportunity I don’t want to miss.
“Being able to take part in a huge event like a World Championships in Australia is such a great opportunity, so early on in my triathlon career.”
Beyond the chance to qualify for Wollongong, Brimelow is looking forward to racing at the Gold Coast Triathlon – an event he has come to love over the years.
With its fast, flat course and vibrant atmosphere, the event has become a highlight on his racing calendar.
“I enjoy the weekend away at the Gold Coast Triathlon,” Brimelow said.
“I have competed a few times, and always have a good time. There is always a great group of friends of mine who compete. It is a fun flat course, with plenty of challenges.”
